According to local residents and security sources, the explosion occurred around 11 a.m. on Friday, targeting the Furunduma axis. The initial blast killed 17 people on the spot, including four women, six children, and seven other passengers.
By Monday, additional bodies were recovered from nearby bushes, increasing the death toll to 26.
A security source, who requested anonymity, confirmed the updated toll to Daily Trust, stating: “As of the last count, 26 people have died, including the four women, six children, and 16 others. Some victims were burnt beyond recognition.”
ISWAP confirmed its involvement in the attack via a statement on its Telegram channel, aligning with the reported casualty figure, as confirmed by Reuters.
In another incident, two Nigerian soldiers were killed by a suspected landmine while on duty along the Maiduguri-Damboa Road. The explosion occurred near the abandoned village of Nyeliri in Konduga Local Government Area.
According to security sources, the soldiers, part of a landmine detection team, stepped on an IED while escorting commuters. The District Head of Damboa, Alhaji Lawan Maina, also corroborated the incident, stating: “Two soldiers were killed.”
Attempts to contact the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages by the time of reporting.
The recent attacks serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by insurgents in northeastern Nigeria, despite continued military operations in the region.
