Emir of Kano Demands Justice for Uromi Killings as CDS Vows to Collaborate on Investigation
The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has called on authorities to take immediate and decisive action against those responsible for the tragic killing of Kano indigenes in Uromi, Edo State. In his Eid-el-Fitr sermon at the Kofar Mata Eid ground in Kano, the Emir stressed the necessity of justice to restore peace and stability, noting that mere condemnation was insufficient. The Emir urged Kano youths to refrain from retaliatory actions, emphasizing that Islam prohibits revenge and encourages justice through lawful means. His message was delivered to a large gathering, including the state governor and his deputy.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has promised that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) will collaborate with the police and other security agencies to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the killings. General Musa condemned the incident and stated that it could have been avoided if the authorities had been notified earlier.
Additionally, the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Senator Sani Musa (APC Niger) condemned the killings, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
In response to the incident, the Edo State government has suspended all illegal vigilante groups, including the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (rtd.). This follows an internal review of the killings. The government confirmed that the local vigilante group involved had not been registered or profiled with the appropriate authorities.
The Edo State government also announced ongoing investigations, with 14 suspects currently in custody. A special team set up by the Inspector-General of Police is conducting a manhunt for others involved in the killings.
The Kano State government has arranged for a delegation to travel to Edo to engage with the local authorities and Hausa community to ensure justice is served and the perpetrators are brought to book. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf condemned the act and reassured the people of Kano that the government would pursue justice and ensure the affected families receive compensation.
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) also condemned the killings, calling for a thorough investigation and the arrest of those responsible. The organization urged against any form of retaliation, highlighting the importance of justice and due process.
Finally, the spokesman for the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi, called for the arrest of the perpetrators and urged Nigerians to live in harmony despite ethnic or religious differences.
