Papua New Guinea, a nation already grappling with the aftermath of natural calamities, is now reeling from a catastrophic landslide that has claimed the lives of at least 670 people, with fears that the toll may rise further……CONTINUE READING
The latest figures, provided by Serhan Aktoprak, the chief of the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the nation, paint a grim picture of the extent of the disaster. Initially estimated to have affected 60 homes, the landslide has now buried more than 150 homes under tons of earth and rock, underscoring the sheer magnitude of the tragedy.
The Mulitaka region of the province bore the brunt of the catastrophe, with more than six villages ravaged by the force of nature. Amidst the wreckage, rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors and recover the bodies of those lost to the landslide’s fury.
Heart-wrenching scenes of families searching for their loved ones amidst the debris are unfolding, as hopes of finding survivors fade with each passing hour. Aktoprak has somberly acknowledged the grim reality, stating that the chances of finding more survivors are dwindling.
The scale of the devastation is compounded by Papua New Guinea’s geographical location within the volatile ‘Pacific Ring of Fire,’ a region prone to seismic activities such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This latest tragedy adds to the nation’s woes, following a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in March, further highlighting the precariousness of life in this region.
As the international community rallies to support Papua New Guinea in its time of need, the focus remains on providing aid to the affected communities and bolstering disaster preparedness efforts to mitigate the impact of future catastrophes. However, for now, the nation mourns the loss of hundreds of lives and grapples with the daunting task of rebuilding shattered communities in the wake of this devastating landslide.
