Nigeria Plunges Into Darkness As National Grid System Suffers Collapse

Nigeria is once again grappling with a nationwide blackout following the collapse of the national grid system, which is operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from its base in Osogbo, Osun State.

An early morning investigation by The Guardian revealed that the grid’s capacity had dwindled to a mere 273 megawatts of electricity, originating from just two of the more than 27 electricity generation sources.

This power outage occurs shortly after TCN celebrated an ostensibly dubious milestone of 400 days of grid stability, raising questions about the reliability of the grid infrastructure.

Several Distribution Companies confirmed to The Guardian that the grid failure transpired at 12:41 AM, resulting in the shutdown of most of their feeders.

As of 4:00 AM on Thursday, only five generating plants were operational on the grid. Afam VI was generating 0.70MW, Dadinkowa registered zero generation, Ibom Power contributed 32.90MW, Jebba supplied 240MW, and Olorunsogo was connected to the grid but produced no electricity.

At around 1:00 AM, the total power supply on the grid plummeted to 35MW, indicating a comprehensive system collapse. Subsequently, it gradually recovered to 273MW at the time of this report.

The TCN has not provided any official response to inquiries regarding this development.
