President Biden suggested today that Republicans aim to impeach him in order to force a government shutdown, following the White House’s strong criticism of plans for an impeachment inquiry against the president. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed the inquiry as a “political stunt,” stressing the absence of evidence linking Biden to his son Hunter’s business dealings.

The inquiry primarily revolves around whether Biden benefited from Hunter Biden’s business affairs. Biden mentioned that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right Republican and ally of former President Donald Trump, expressed her desire to impeach him upon her election. He speculated that their motivation might be to shut down the government.
Despite these developments, Biden asserted that he remains focused on his duties and doesn’t prioritize the impeachment inquiry. The White House placed blame on Taylor Greene for pressuring House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to initiate the impeachment inquiry.
McCarthy’s decision could lead to lengthy and contentious House hearings, potentially diverting attention from crucial legislative tasks and impacting the 2024 presidential race, where Trump seeks to regain the White House after his 2020 loss to Biden.
