Race Against Time: INEC Confirms When Voter Registration Will Close
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will span an entire year and conclude on August 30, 2026. The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The commission revealed that the physical phase of the registration exercise began nationwide on Monday across all 811 state and local government offices, following the launch of its online pre-registration portal on August 18, 2025. Within the first week alone, a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians had pre-registered online.
According to the breakdown, 661,846 registrants (47.96 per cent) are male while 717,856 (52.04 per cent) are female. Young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34 make up the majority with 860,286 (62.37 per cent). In terms of occupation, students account for 374,534 registrants (27.15 per cent), and persons with disabilities number 27,089 (1.96 per cent).
INEC explained that the physical registration exercise is designed both for those who prefer in-person enrollment and for individuals who initiated the process online and need to finalize it at designated centres. The commission urged eligible citizens to seize the opportunity of the year-long exercise rather than waiting until the deadline, warning that late rushes often overwhelm registration centres.
The electoral body reminded the public that the CVR is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered, cautioning that double or multiple registrations remain unlawful. It also clarified that the exercise accommodates transfers and replacement of voter cards, including both interstate and intrastate movements as well as the re-issuance of lost or damaged cards.
