According to Nivo News, the annual Hausa Day, first commemorated in 2015, has grown into a worldwide cultural event observed every August 26 across several continents, though it is yet to receive official recognition from the United Nations. Daura was selected as the host city for this year’s edition in recognition of its historic standing as the cradle of the Hausa people and birthplace of the Hausa language and identity.

This year’s commemoration also marks the first time the event is receiving full government backing through the Katsina State History and Culture Bureau. Organisers disclosed that participants from 25 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas are in attendance, projecting Daura onto the global stage as a cultural epicentre of Hausa heritage.

The day-long programme features a grand durbar procession showcasing traditional horsemanship and regalia, cultural exhibitions of Hausa history, attire, crafts, and cuisine, as well as academic symposiums by leading scholars on the relevance of the Hausa language in the modern world.

Abdulbaqi Jari, a journalist and founder of Hausa Day, underscored the growing influence of the language, noting that Hausa is currently the 11th most spoken language in the world and is projected to rise to fifth place by 2050. He explained that the celebration was established to promote and preserve the Hausa language and culture, foster unity among Hausa-speaking communities globally, and highlight the creative and economic potential of Hausa heritage in today’s interconnected world.

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, is welcoming guests to his palace for the festivities. Distinguished attendees include the acting Governor of Katsina State, Faruk Lawal Jobe, and the Sultan of Damagaram in Niger Republic, Aboubacar Sanda Oumarou, among others. Organisers describe the 2025 event as a milestone in elevating Hausa culture on the global stage, uniting communities from around the world to celebrate one of Africa’s most enduring languages and traditions.
