“Desperation On The Highways: Osun, Ondo Residents Cry Out As Federal Roads Collapse”

Published

Commuters and residents in Osun and Ondo states have expressed frustration over the worsening condition of major federal roads, urging the government to take swift action to avert further hardship and loss of lives.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In Osun State, motorists using the Ilesa–Akure Expressway described the Osu–Iwaraja axis as a nightmare, with large sections now impassable. Speaking at Iloko Junction on Sunday, one of the most damaged stretches, local resident Tomisin Olatunde lamented that interventions by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had been limited to temporary patching.

“Only a complete removal and replacement of the asphalt can resolve this,” Olatunde said, warning that several serious accidents had occurred between March and June this year along the corridor linking Ile-Ife, Osu, Ilesa, and Iwaraja.

Commercial driver Razaq Akinleye, who has plied the road for 15 years, said the last major reconstruction was carried out before the 2015 elections. According to him, recent expansion works from Ilekki to Ilesa barely scratch the surface of the problem.

“FRSC officers tried filling some portions earlier this year to reduce crashes, but the road needs a total overhaul. FERMA’s patching barely lasts three months before it deteriorates again. These bad spots even expose motorists to robbers and kidnappers because vehicles have to slow down,” Akinleye noted.

Osun State Commissioner for Information Kolapo Alimi said the state government had taken it upon itself to repair some federal roads but called on Abuja to take full responsibility. “We are already assisting in fixing some federal roads in Osun, but the Federal Government must live up to its responsibility and rehabilitate this road,” Alimi stated.

In Ondo State, residents of communities along the Akure–Ado Ekiti Expressway also appealed for a speedy completion of its reconstruction. The project, which began in the twilight of the Muhammadu Buhari administration, has lingered for years, causing severe traffic congestion and enabling criminals to target travellers.

During a recent inspection, Minister of Works David Umahi announced that the Akure–Ita-Ogbolu–Iju–Ado stretch would be redesigned and rebuilt with concrete. But locals say the delays are taking a toll. Olamide Babalayo, a native of Iju, urged the government to hasten the project, saying, “The last time I drove home was terrible. We appreciate the effort, but people in the community are suffering, especially this rainy season.”

A commercial driver identified as Kunle highlighted the road’s economic importance, noting that transporters are forced to spend heavily on vehicle repairs. “This route is vital for trade between Ondo and Ekiti states. The government should complete it quickly to boost economic activities,” he said.

Reacting to concerns, Ebenezer Adeniyan, Chief Press Secretary to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, acknowledged that the road is a federal responsibility but expressed hope that progress would be faster now that the rainy season is easing.

“Terrorists and their sympathizers deserve death, not forgiveness. The Nigerian government must stop forgiving and romancing terrorism,” he wrote.

The comments come as Minister of Defence Christopher Musa assured Nigerians that terrorists and bandits are sustaining heavy losses in ongoing military operations. Speaking after a security briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Musa said the Armed Forces had updated the President on the latest security situation and clarified what he described as “misleading interpretations” circulating in the media.

One protester shouted, “We are not asking for too much. Give us light!” as the march continued.

Local business owners highlighted the heavy toll of inconsistent electricity on their operations, noting that reliance on fuel-powered generators has driven up costs. Former UniAbuja VC Urges Nigeria To Tackle Insecurity Through National Dialogue.

According to a statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Justice A.O. Owoeye, sitting at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday, March 12, 2026, ruled that the Responsible Leaders Hotel, located at 1 Ostra Close, Jobi Fele Way, Alausa, Ikeja, be temporarily handed over to the government. The property is valued at approximately ₦1.3 billion.

The order followed an urgent application by the EFCC, presented by its lawyer, C.C. Okezie, who provided evidence suggesting the hotel was acquired through illicit means. The application was supported by an affidavit sworn by Obed Tanko, an EFCC investigator.

According to the EFCC, Olutoke allegedly convinced numerous Nigerians to invest billions of naira in a capital-guaranteed forex trading and investment scheme, promising secure funds and high returns.

“The suspect allegedly obtained billions of naira from unsuspecting investors under the guise of operating a capital-guaranteed forex trading and investment scheme,” the commission said.

Investigations revealed that neither Olutoke nor his company had the required legal permits to operate an investment business. Instead of trading the funds as promised, the EFCC claims the money was used to acquire expensive properties, including the Ikeja hotel.

During the hearing, Okezie argued that the hotel should be seized as it was reasonably suspected to have been purchased with proceeds from unlawful activities. After reviewing the evidence, Justice Owoeye agreed, ruling that the asset should be temporarily taken over while the case proceeds.

The judge also ordered the EFCC to publish the decision in a national newspaper, allowing anyone with a legal claim to the hotel to come forward and explain why the property should not ultimately be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
