Basketball Royalty! Nigeria’s D’Tigress Crush Rivals to Secure Fifth AfroBasket Gold, Stay Unbeaten for a Decade

Prior to their latest triumph, D’Tigress had edged out Senegal 75–68 in a tense semifinal encounter to book their place in the final.
The victory over Mali on August 3 marks Nigeria’s seventh AfroBasket title overall, and extends their remarkable unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 games, a streak that dates back to 2015.
With this feat, D’Tigress become the first African basketball team—male or female—to win the continental championship five times consecutively.
The final was tightly contested, with Nigeria holding a slim 61–56 lead at the end of the third quarter. However, the reigning champions pulled away in the final stretch, outscoring Mali 17–8 to seal the win.
Head coach Rena Wakama, appointed in 2023, continues to rewrite history. She became the first woman to coach a team to AfroBasket glory in 2023, and has now guided Nigeria to back-to-back titles. At just 33 years old, Wakama also previously led the team to their first-ever Olympic quarterfinal berth.
This latest victory adds to Nigeria’s AfroBasket successes in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. Impressively, D’Tigress have maintained a perfect winning record at the tournament for a full decade, dominating every edition since 2015.

When the appointment was first announced, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, highlighted Aina’s deep background in digital infrastructure, public-sector reforms, and national examination systems, noting his historic milestone as one of Nigeria’s youngest computer engineering professors.
In his inaugural address, Aina acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessor—who is widely credited with modernizing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)—and vowed to expand on those achievements. Emphasizing a strong stance against malpractice, he warned wrongdoers that their illicit activities have no place at JAMB, promising to ramp up modern technological investments and deepen partnerships with security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the admissions process.
