Shockwaves in SDP! NEC Sweeps Out NWC Executives, Declares El‑Rufai Persona Non Grata
The leadership crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) took a dramatic turn on Friday as the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) led by suspended National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, amid a protracted power tussle.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The resolution was passed at an emergency NEC meeting in Abuja, presided over by the party’s National Financial Secretary, Ibrahim Biu.
“The NWC, by this resolution, stands dissolved. We hereby nominate the following persons to take charge of the affairs of our great party and move the party forward,” Biu declared.
The newly constituted interim leadership includes Adamu Modibo (National Chairman), Abubakar Dogara (Deputy Chairman), Ekpeyong Ambo (National Secretary), Joseph Abu (National Organising Secretary), Chief Solsuema Osaro (National Legal Adviser), Judith Shuaibu (National Publicity Secretary), Ibrahim Biu (Financial Secretary), and Eluwa Ifeanyi (National Youth Speaker).
However, the embattled National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, swiftly rejected the dissolution, describing the NEC meeting as illegal and its resolutions invalid.
Biu explained that the drastic decision followed months of unresolved factional clashes.
“Our party has unfortunately been engulfed in a leadership crisis. You are all aware that a group loyal to the National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, suspended the National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, over alleged misappropriation and fraud,” he said.
“The chairman denied those allegations and described the appointments by the secretary’s group as illegal. This led to clashes at the National Secretariat that even required security intervention.”
Biu lamented that reconciliation efforts had failed, threatening to derail the gains the party had made since its 2022 convention.
“We have worked tirelessly over the past three years to build this party. We cannot allow these efforts to go to waste,” he stressed. “If the leadership cannot resolve the crisis, then NEC members, particularly at the state level, must act to restore confidence and trust.”
But in a statement issued shortly after, Agunloye alleged the Abuja meeting was orchestrated by a rival faction.
“The NWC dissociates itself from the so‑called NEC meeting in Abuja. We urge our elected officials, zonal officers, and state chairmen to disregard this illegal gathering,” he said.
Agunloye further revealed that 13 state chairmen had submitted sworn affidavits to INEC, distancing themselves from the NEC meeting and alleging that their signatures were misused.
“Our state chairmen must be guided by the SDP constitution and avoid falling into traps that could warrant sanctions,” he warned.
SDP Pulls Out of Opposition Coalition
In another development, the party announced its withdrawal from the coalition of opposition parties spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“After consultations, stakeholders agreed that the SDP should maintain its identity,” said Abubakar Dogara, newly named Deputy Chairman. “We will contest the 2027 elections with our own presidential and vice-presidential candidates.”
Party Disowns El‑Rufai
The SDP also issued a disclaimer distancing itself from former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El‑Rufai, stating that he was neither a member nor authorised to speak for the party.
Inuwa Idris, the party’s North‑West Zonal Secretary, told journalists in Kaduna:
“It has come to our attention that Malam Nasir El‑Rufai has been appearing at various engagements, purporting to represent the SDP. Let it be clear: he is not authorised, mandated, or recognised by the SDP in any capacity.”
Idris emphasised that El‑Rufai’s name does not appear in any membership records and cautioned stakeholders against associating his comments with the party. He reaffirmed the leadership structure under acting National Chairman Dr. Sadiq Umar, National Secretary Dr. Olu Agunloye, and 2023 presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo.

Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Chief Hon. Mrs. Lami Danladi Ogenyi, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called on local security authorities to take urgent action.
In a statement issued by her Chief Press Secretary, Agbaji Samuel Atsonwu, Danladi described the abduction as a “serious affront to peace, faith, and the collective conscience of Ado LGA.” She emphasized that attacks on places of worship—traditionally safe spaces for communities—are particularly alarming.
Danladi highlighted the widespread fear now gripping Utonkon and surrounding areas, noting that families remain traumatized, economic activities have been disrupted, and daily life has become uncertain.
She warned that the incident reflects broader insecurity challenges in Ado LGA and cautioned that inaction could escalate the situation into a more severe crisis.
The Deputy Speaker urged the Chief Security Officer of Ado LGA to take immediate, visible, and coordinated steps to support rescue operations, reassure residents, and prevent further attacks. She also called on security agencies to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and community engagement, especially around vulnerable sites such as churches.
Danladi further appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and other community stakeholders to stay vigilant, cooperate with authorities, and reject silence in the face of violence.
She stressed that the people of Ado LGA are not seeking sympathy alone but demand decisive action, accountability, and lasting protection.
