Culture Clash! Charly Boy Rejects Lagos’ Decision to Drop His Name for Olamide
Veteran entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa—widely known as Charly Boy—has criticised the renaming of the famous Charly Boy Bus Stop in Lagos, calling it an attempt to erase history and suppress a legacy of activism.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The landmark, situated along the Gbagada–Bariga corridor, was recently renamed “Baddo Bus Stop” in honour of award‑winning rapper Olamide Adedeji (Baddo).
The change was announced by the Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area, Kolade David, during the commissioning of newly renamed streets and landmarks meant to celebrate icons who have elevated the community’s image. Among those honoured were King Sunny Ade, Tony Tetuila, 9ice, Bukayo Saka, and Olamide, who also now has a street bearing his name.
But Charly Boy—whose name had been tied to the bus stop for decades—took to his official X handle on Saturday to register his displeasure, stressing that while a nameplate can be changed, a legacy cannot be erased.
He described the decision as “a move driven by fear,” symbolising attempts to undermine his decades of defiance, outspoken criticism of injustice, and resistance to oppressive systems.
“Dem say dem don change the name of Charly Boy Bus Stop. Hmmm. Very interesting. But make I remind you of something:
You can rename a place… but you can’t rename a legacy. You can change the signboard… but you can’t erase the spirit. And you definitely can’t silence a voice that shook your tables for decades! This is not just about a bus stop. This is about fear—fear of a boy who refused to bow, fear of a man who challenged the oppressors, fear of someone who never begged the system for acceptance.
So what do timid people do? They change the name, thinking it will wash away their shame.”
Charly Boy’s response has sparked conversations online, with many reflecting on how symbolic landmarks preserve cultural memory and activism.

Salah, who has scored 67 goals in 115 appearances for Egypt, will carry the nation’s hopes as they aim for a strong run in the tournament.
Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush also made the squad following an impressive season, while 18-year-old Barcelona U19 striker Hamza Abdelkarim earned a surprise call-up despite not yet making a senior international appearance. Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed was among the notable omissions.
Egypt will reduce the squad to the FIFA-required 26 players after their friendly against Russia in Cairo on May 28, before facing Brazil in another warm-up match on June 6 in Cleveland.
The Pharaohs have been drawn in Group G, where they will begin their campaign against Belgium on June 15, followed by matches against New Zealand and Iran.
The squad also includes goalkeepers Mohamed El Shenawy and Mostafa Shobeir, along with experienced midfielders Mahmoud Trezeguet and Emam Ashour, as Egypt prepare for the expanded 48-team World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
