I’m Sorry’: Former United Striker Chicharito Bows to Pressure After Sexist Statement Goes Viral”

The 37-year-old, popularly known as “Chicharito,” drew criticism last week after sharing an Instagram video in which he accused women of “eradicating masculinity” and urged them to focus on “multiplying, cleaning, and maintaining the home.”
In the video, Hernandez declared:
“Women, you are failing. You are eradicating masculinity by making society hypersensitive. Embrace your feminine energy—nurturing, caring, receiving, multiplying, cleaning, maintaining the home, which is the most precious place for us men.”
He added:
“Do not be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man who only wants to see you happy… But you women must learn to honour masculinity.”
A day earlier, he had also sparked controversy with another post, asking:
“So, you want a man who provides, but for you, cleaning is patriarchal oppression? Interesting.”
The remarks triggered swift disciplinary responses from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and his club, Chivas, both of which condemned the statements as inconsistent with their values. The FMF, along with Mexico’s top men’s and women’s leagues, confirmed that their gender and diversity commission had launched a probe “to prevent and punish this behaviour.” Chivas announced it had taken “appropriate action,” though details were not disclosed.
Even Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo weighed in, saying:
“Chicharito is a very good footballer, but when it comes to his opinion on women… he still has a lot to learn.”
In response to the uproar, Hernandez posted an apology on Instagram on Friday, July 25, expressing remorse and pledging to learn from the incident:
“I sincerely thank everyone who has supported me, who has respectfully shared their perspectives with me and demanded that I be a better person.
I am deeply sorry for any confusion or upset my recent words have caused; it was never my intention to limit, hurt, or divide.
As a father, man, and member of this community, my priority is to act with respect, humility, and responsibility. I am listening, reflecting, and committed to expressing myself with greater clarity and sensitivity, especially on such sensitive topics.
Change begins with oneself. I will use this opportunity to grow and continue working to be a better version of myself, guided by honesty, love for my family, my values, and love for all of you. Thank you for your understanding, demand, love, and company on this path.”

The renewed nomination comes roughly two weeks after Dakingari’s name was initially sent to the Senate but later withdrawn following controversy. His earlier nomination, which placed him alongside candidates for ambassadorial postings to the United States, United Kingdom, and France, sparked debate and led to the withdrawal.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Tinubu’s letter conveying the re-nomination. The president cited Section 171(1), (2)(c), and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the appointment.
Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening, instructing the panel to submit its report within one week. Senators clarified that the appointment is for a non-career ambassadorship, noting that Dakingari’s political and public service background aligns more with a political posting than a professional foreign service role.
The re-submission officially reopens consideration of Dakingari’s appointment, which remains subject to Senate confirmation. The Committee on Foreign Affairs is expected to complete its screening and report back within the specified timeframe.

Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Chief Hon. Mrs. Lami Danladi Ogenyi, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and called on local security authorities to take urgent action.
In a statement issued by her Chief Press Secretary, Agbaji Samuel Atsonwu, Danladi described the abduction as a “serious affront to peace, faith, and the collective conscience of Ado LGA.” She emphasized that attacks on places of worship—traditionally safe spaces for communities—are particularly alarming.
Danladi highlighted the widespread fear now gripping Utonkon and surrounding areas, noting that families remain traumatized, economic activities have been disrupted, and daily life has become uncertain.
She warned that the incident reflects broader insecurity challenges in Ado LGA and cautioned that inaction could escalate the situation into a more severe crisis.
The Deputy Speaker urged the Chief Security Officer of Ado LGA to take immediate, visible, and coordinated steps to support rescue operations, reassure residents, and prevent further attacks. She also called on security agencies to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and community engagement, especially around vulnerable sites such as churches.
Danladi further appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and other community stakeholders to stay vigilant, cooperate with authorities, and reject silence in the face of violence.
She stressed that the people of Ado LGA are not seeking sympathy alone but demand decisive action, accountability, and lasting protection.

A total of N29,638,584.78 was presented to 10 beneficiaries on Tuesday. The ceremony was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Umar Sokoto, representing Commissioner of Police Ahmad Musa, alongside other members of the command’s management team.
Umar explained that the disbursement is part of the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance Scheme, designed to provide financial support to families of fallen officers, and advised recipients to use the funds wisely for household needs.
Speaking for the beneficiaries, Mrs. Hamimatu Ahmad, widow of one of the late officers, thanked the police authorities for the support. The command noted that the payment is part of ongoing welfare initiatives for personnel and families of officers who lost their lives in active service.
