Ann-Kio Briggs: “Tinubu Sent Ibas to Quench Fire, But He’s Fueling It in Rivers”
Human rights advocate Ann-Kio Briggs has publicly criticized Rear Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (retired), the presidentially appointed Administrator of Rivers State, accusing him of aggravating the political crisis he was meant to resolve.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Briggs expressed her concern during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. She alleged that instead of calming tensions, Ibas was intensifying the conflict in Rivers, contrary to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate.
According to Briggs, “The President sent Ibas to extinguish a fire, but instead, he’s pouring petrol on it.” She claimed that Ibas had removed officials duly elected into government positions, further destabilizing the state.
President Tinubu appointed Ibas—Nigeria’s former Chief of Naval Staff (2015–2021)—as the Administrator of Rivers in March 2025 following the declaration of a state of emergency. The decision came amid a deepening political standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. The President had said the emergency rule, which led to the suspension of both Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odu, was intended to restore order.
Briggs, however, contends that Ibas’s administration is marked by suppression and symbolic actions, including allegedly removing Governor Fubara’s images from Government House, an act she deems provocative and unlawful.
“Let me be clear, Siminalayi Fubara remains the legitimate Governor of Rivers State,” she emphasized.
Briggs further noted that although Tinubu initially indicated the emergency rule would last for six months, he retains the authority to reverse it and reinstate the democratic structure earlier than scheduled.
Meanwhile, protests continue in Port Harcourt as two groups of women staged opposing demonstrations—one backing the emergency administration, while the other, partially dressed in protest, demanded the immediate return of Fubara.
