Tinubu’s Ambassadorial Nominees Await Senate Screening After DSS Approval

Published

on

The Federal Government has completed the vetting of individuals nominated to serve in Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad, with the list now awaiting formal transmission to the National Assembly. The Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant agencies have concluded security and background checks on the nominees expected to fill positions in 109 foreign missions, including 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Although the final list was expected to reach the Senate earlier in the week, President Bola Tinubu has yet to transmit the names. The delay comes as the President continues a two-week working visit to Paris, France, which began on April 2. According to Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President will use the visit to assess his administration’s mid-term performance and evaluate key milestones.

Sources have confirmed that the vetting process is complete, but the delay in forwarding the list to the legislature is reportedly due to final adjustments to the nominees. This delay has caused some uncertainty, as officials were anticipating the list earlier in the week. Once transmitted, the Senate will screen and confirm the nominees before they receive Letters of Credence and assume their duties in foreign countries.

The delay has also been linked to concerns over the financial burden of the appointments. A senior foreign service officer stated that President Tinubu is cautious about the costs associated with appointing new ambassadors, preferring to allocate funds to domestic reforms instead. While the nomination list will eventually be released, it is uncertain when the appointments will be made official.

In September 2023, President Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non-career, and in March 2025, the Presidency indicated that replacements would be unveiled “soon.” Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, previously explained that the delay was due to financial constraints, emphasizing that funds were necessary to effectively support the missions.

ADC Hails NBA Intervention, Urges INEC To Remain Neutral In Party Leadership Crisis.

Published

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the intervention of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in its ongoing leadership dispute, describing the legal body’s position as a validation of its long-standing claims of judicial abuse.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the NBA’s caution against forum shopping and abuse of court processes supports its stance that attempts to challenge its leadership in court are legally flawed.

The ADC said the NBA had clarified that courts do not have jurisdiction over internal affairs of political parties and that seeking interim or interlocutory orders in such matters contravenes the Electoral Act.

According to the party, this position aligns with its belief that the legal process is being manipulated for political purposes rather than genuine dispute resolution.

It described the situation as a coordinated attempt to weaponise the judiciary, which the NBA had reportedly condemned as abuse of court process driven by forum shopping and malicious litigation.

The ADC further linked the crisis to broader political tensions, alleging that it reflects anxiety within the ruling party amid insecurity, economic hardship, and declining public trust ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party warned that any court orders obtained contrary to due process would be legally defective and unenforceable.

While commending the NBA for urging disciplinary action against erring legal practitioners and judicial officers, the ADC called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain strictly neutral.

It stressed that INEC must not take any action that could legitimise what it described as unlawful judicial interference in party affairs.

The party added that the matter goes beyond internal politics and concerns the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy, vowing to pursue all lawful means to defend its position.
