Ogun First Lady Leads Grassroots Push for Measles, Rubella Vaccine Awareness

Ogun State First Lady, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, has called on residents to actively promote the upcoming national measles and rubella vaccination campaign, stressing its importance for safeguarding children’s health and securing the nation’s future.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

She made this appeal on Friday during a sensitization event held at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, aimed at engaging the wives of local government chairmen and other key stakeholders across the state.

Highlighting the critical nature of the initiative, Mrs. Abiodun emphasized the need to extend awareness efforts to grassroots communities. She cited alarming statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), noting that in 2023 alone, there were over 10 million global measles cases and 136,000 deaths—many of them children under five. Nigeria, she said, recorded outbreaks in 37 Local Government Areas across 13 states.

Mrs. Abiodun expressed concern over the continued prevalence of measles decades after the introduction of its vaccine, describing the disease as a preventable tragedy that still imposes emotional, financial, and health burdens on families.

She also warned about the often-overlooked threat of rubella, which can cause congenital rubella syndrome—a condition that may lead to lifelong complications like blindness, deafness, heart defects, and neurological disorders.

The First Lady pointed to the introduction of the combined Measles-Rubella (M-R) vaccine as a crucial step in saving an estimated 2.8 million lives in Nigeria and reducing the broader global health burden.

Calling the vaccine a life-saving solution and a vital investment in future generations, she urged all mothers and stakeholders in the state to prioritize children’s well-being and support the campaign.

Supporting her remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Tayo Lawal, emphasized that education and community engagement are key to successful vaccine adoption. He advocated for disseminating reliable information on vaccine safety and effectiveness through workshops, printed materials, and social media outreach to ensure wide public understanding.

Maidoki announced his departure in a resignation letter dated May 14, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman of Rafin Zuru Ward in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

In the letter, the lawmaker said his decision was driven by the persistent crisis rocking the party, which he noted had become a major threat to his political future and personal ambition.

“This is to inform you, the chairman of APC Rafin Zuru Ward, that I have withdrawn my membership card as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he stated.

In a related development, two notable APC aspirants in Kebbi State, former Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah and Sani M. Kabiru, have also withdrawn from the party’s senatorial primaries set for May 18, 2026.

Na’Allah, who previously represented Kebbi South Senatorial District, communicated his withdrawal in a letter to the APC State Chairman in Birnin Kebbi.

The former senator said his decision was based on what he described as credible information regarding the party’s disposition ahead of the primary, alleging that directives from powerful quarters had already shaped the process.
