Aid Cuts Linked to Tragic Cholera Deaths in South Sudan, Save the Children Reports
Save the Children, a UK-based humanitarian organisation, has revealed that eight individuals — including five children — lost their lives during a desperate three-hour trek to receive medical care in South Sudan. The incident occurred after U.S. foreign aid reductions led to the shutdown of key health facilities in the region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
These deaths, which happened last month, are among the earliest directly linked to foreign aid cutbacks initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, following his administration’s decision to pause overseas funding for policy review under the “America First” initiative.
Health experts have raised concerns that the massive aid withdrawal — reportedly over 90% of USAID contracts — could result in millions of preventable deaths in the coming years from diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and from malnutrition.
As of now, the U.S. State Department has not issued an official statement on the matter.
Save the Children previously supported 27 health centres across South Sudan’s Jonglei State, but due to the funding cuts, seven were completely closed and the remaining twenty are only partially functional. Additionally, U.S.-funded transportation for medical emergencies has also ceased, leaving patients with no choice but to undertake long, exhausting journeys on foot — in sweltering 40°C (104°F) temperatures — to access basic care.
Christopher Nyamandi, the organisation’s Country Director in South Sudan, confirmed that three of the deceased children were under five years old. He condemned the impact of international decisions on vulnerable populations, stating:
“There should be global moral outrage that the decisions made by powerful people in other countries have led to child deaths in just a matter of weeks.”
