Reps to Reconsider Bill Disqualifying Older Politicians from 2027 Elections

Published

on

The House of Representatives is considering a reversal of its earlier decision to advance a controversial bill aimed at disqualifying individuals above the age of 60 from contesting for the offices of President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor in Nigeria. The bill, titled “A Bill to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (with alterations),” passed its second reading in March 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sponsored by Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo), the bill proposes an amendment to Section 131 of the Constitution, stipulating that presidential candidates must be no older than 60 at the time of contesting, with similar restrictions for gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates. If passed, this would disqualify several prominent figures from the 2027 general elections, including President Bola Tinubu (75), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (81), Labour Party’s Peter Obi (66), and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai (67).

Sources within the House reveal that there is strong resistance to the bill, with lobbying efforts underway to ensure its withdrawal. The bill has sparked discontent within the executive branch, with reports suggesting that President Tinubu is unhappy with the potential implications.

The controversy surrounding the bill is similar to a previous instance when the House reversed its decision on a bill that would have stripped vice presidents, governors, and their deputies of immunity. Observers expect that this age-limit bill could face a similar fate, with the House potentially withdrawing it for further consultation after the Sallah and Easter break.

Should the bill be withdrawn, it would represent a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, one that could reshape the eligibility criteria for future elections.
