Gbemre: Nigerians Don’t Need Obasanjo, Obi to Realize Democracy Is Failing

Published

on

A prominent Niger Delta activist, Zik Gbemre, has asserted that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, lack the moral standing to discuss the perceived failure of democracy in Nigeria. According to Gbemre, both leaders are part of the political class responsible for the nation’s current challenges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In an interview with Vanguard, Gbemre expressed skepticism about Obasanjo’s qualifications to critique Nigeria’s democracy, pointing out that despite his prolonged time in power, the former president did not adequately address the nation’s issues.

He remarked, “Nigerians do not need Obasanjo, Obi, or others to lead discussions on democracy’s failures. They have played significant roles in transforming democracy into a flawed political system driven by corrupt leadership. What the country truly needs is good governance rather than just democracy.”

Gbemre argued that the problem is not with the democratic system itself but with the lack of credible leadership. He criticized Obasanjo’s tenure, highlighting missed opportunities to build infrastructure, develop the Niger Delta, and improve the nation’s economic climate.

He recalled that under Obasanjo’s leadership, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was established, but its mandate was diluted to include regions beyond the South-South. Additionally, Gbemre noted that Obasanjo failed to build more functional refineries, enhance power infrastructure, and develop the nation’s railways.

Gbemre also pointed to various controversies during Obasanjo’s presidency, including the impeachment of Senate presidents, state governors, and the declaration of a state of emergency. He accused the former president of instigating political instability and undermining democratic principles.

Reflecting on the Odi massacre and other military actions during Obasanjo’s administration, Gbemre emphasized that these events contradicted the former president’s current stance on democracy.

He concluded that the real issue facing Nigeria is the lack of responsible leadership and accountability, not the democratic system itself.

Governor Okpebholo Dethrones Three Traditional Rulers in Bold Leadership Move

Published

on

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has revoked the appointments of three traditional rulers across various local government areas of the state, citing legal irregularities and governance concerns. The affected monarchs include Alhaji Umoru Inusa Umoru (Aidenogie of South Ibie, Etsako West), Lukman Akemokue (Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, Etsako East), and Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor (Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Agenebode, Etsako East).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, the decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday. The administration emphasized that the appointments—particularly those made in 2024 by the previous administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki—did not follow appropriate customary or legal processes.

Governor Okpebholo reinstated Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi as the legitimate Aidenogie of South Ibie, stating that the position was never lawfully declared vacant before the earlier replacement.

Regarding the throne of Okpella, the governor highlighted that Akemokue’s appointment contravened the Bendel State Legal Notice No. 132 of 1979, which outlines succession procedures for the Okuokpellagbe title. The state has now begun the formal process to select a new, legally recognized traditional ruler for the community.

Dr. Egabor’s removal as Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom was also confirmed, with the state linking his dethronement to ongoing insecurity in the area, including kidnappings and killings. His suspension had previously been announced pending investigations into the breakdown of order under his reign.

Governor Okpebholo called on residents of the affected communities to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that all actions taken are in line with existing laws and the state government’s commitment to maintaining peace, unity, and progress in Edo.
