Senator Umeh Criticizes Senate’s Rejection of Motion to Honor Humphrey Nwosu

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has expressed his disappointment over the Senate’s rejection of a motion to immortalize the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic history.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
On Wednesday, a motion presented by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, co-sponsored by members of the minority caucus, particularly from the South-East, was turned down by the Senate. The motion aimed to honor Nwosu for his pivotal role in defending Nigeria’s democratic electoral process during the 1993 presidential elections, widely regarded as one of the most credible in the nation’s history.
Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, acknowledged the contentious nature of the motion, citing divided public opinion regarding Nwosu’s involvement in the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election. When the motion was put to a voice vote, the opposition prevailed, leading to the rejection of the proposal.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Senator Umeh condemned the Senate’s decision, calling it undemocratic. He expressed frustration over the lack of recognition for a man who had made significant contributions to Nigeria’s electoral system.
“It is a question of fairness to a man who did so much for this country. Instead of honoring him, we are being uncharitable to him, even in death. This motion was timely, especially with his funeral just two days away,” Umeh said.
Umeh further emphasized the importance of discussing Nwosu’s contributions, particularly at a time when the nation was preparing to bid him farewell. He argued that, just as opponents of the motion had a right to voice their views, supporters should also have been allowed to present their case. “Shutting down the motion in such a manner was undemocratic,” Umeh added.
The senator suggested that the Senate leadership should have facilitated a debate on the motion, as is customary for such matters, regardless of differing opinions. He pointed out that rejecting the motion was unjust to Nwosu, who had played a crucial role in the development of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission, oversaw the 1993 presidential election that declared late MKO Abiola the winner. Despite the subsequent annulment of the election, Nwosu’s contributions have left a lasting legacy in the country’s democratic process.
