Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa Credits Judiciary for Preventing Impeachment

Published

on

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has expressed gratitude to the judiciary for playing a pivotal role in preventing his impeachment in 2023. Speaking at the maiden Annual Lecture of the Body of Benchers in Abuja, Aiyedatiwa described the judiciary as the “last hope of the common man” and credited both divine intervention and the rule of law for safeguarding his political career.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Judiciary’s Role in Aiyedatiwa’s Survival

While serving as Ondo State’s acting governor during the medical leave of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa faced allegations of gross misconduct from the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly. Lawmakers initiated impeachment proceedings and sought to establish a seven-member investigative panel, as mandated by the Nigerian Constitution.

However, the state’s Chief Judge suspended the proceedings, citing an ex parte order issued by an Abuja court on September 26, 2023, which prevented further action until the order was lifted. On October 16, 2023, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Olatunji Oshati, confirmed that the impeachment process was halted in compliance with the court directive. Aiyedatiwa later assumed full governorship following Akeredolu’s passing in December 2023.

Reflecting on these events, Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of the judiciary in upholding democracy and protecting political officeholders from undue persecution.

“After God, the rule of law was instrumental in my survival. This experience has strengthened my belief in its importance. Without it and the impartial administration of justice, I might not be standing before you today.”

Call for Legal Innovation and Technological Advancement

In his address, Aiyedatiwa urged Nigeria’s judiciary to embrace modern technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, to enhance justice delivery.

“This is a call to action for legal practitioners in an ever-evolving society. As we navigate rapid technological changes, including AI, global commerce, and digital governance, the legal profession must adapt to meet contemporary demands.”

He stressed the need for ongoing legal reforms, highlighting the crucial role of the Body of Benchers in maintaining ethical standards and ensuring the legal framework remains dynamic, relevant, and resilient in the face of global shifts.

“The Body of Benchers serves as the cornerstone of legal practice. As the apex institution overseeing legal education and professional conduct, it has a profound responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the legal profession.”

Strengthening the Legal Framework

Governor Aiyedatiwa concluded by calling for continuous improvements in Nigeria’s legal system to ensure it remains robust and effective in addressing emerging challenges.

“Our educational and ethical foundations must be preserved, strengthened, refined, and adapted to contemporary realities.”

His remarks reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that Nigeria’s judiciary continues to serve as a pillar of democracy and justice.

Senate Rebukes Tunde Bakare Over ‘Mafia State’ Allegations and Senator’s Suspension

Published

on

The Nigerian Senate has firmly rejected recent remarks made by Pastor Tunde Bakare concerning the National Assembly’s endorsement of the state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bakare, in a recent sermon, denounced the Senate’s actions, suggesting Nigeria was sliding into a “mafia state” due to what he called “institutional immorality” orchestrated by both the executive and legislative arms of government.

Responding through a statement signed by its spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate described Bakare’s comments as misleading and unnecessarily hostile. Adaramodu emphasized that while public critique is a democratic right, Bakare’s assertions went beyond healthy discourse and ventured into territory that could erode public confidence in democratic institutions.

The statement pointed out that the cleric’s sweeping generalisations lacked evidence and were laced with personal contempt. It also questioned the political intent behind Bakare’s outburst, labeling it a “biased political homily.”

Adaramodu acknowledged Bakare’s influence in national discourse but argued that his recent comments strayed from constructive criticism and entered the realm of divisive rhetoric. He reminded the public of Bakare’s background as both a legal practitioner and political figure, asserting that the pastor should be aware of the legal limitations around commenting on issues pending before the courts.

He further addressed Bakare’s call for the National Assembly to challenge the executive more aggressively, calling such confrontations “performative” and not reflective of effective legislative oversight. According to Adaramodu, true governance requires cooperation and principled engagement—not unnecessary conflict.

The Senate also dismissed Bakare’s allusion to a potential “third-term agenda,” stressing that no such unconstitutional proposal had been presented before the 10th National Assembly. Adaramodu maintained that all actions taken by the Senate were within the boundaries of its constitutional responsibilities.

He concluded with a call for more thoughtful evaluations of the Senate’s performance, asserting that time would reveal the Assembly’s dedication to national interest. He expressed hope that Pastor Bakare, upon deeper reflection, would come to appreciate the Senate’s role during this critical period in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
