The abduction was confirmed by Rev’d Fr. Patrick Mbamah, the secretary/Archdiocesan Chancellor of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese. Parishioners and church members have expressed deep concerns about the priest’s safety, as conflicting reports have emerged regarding the amount demanded by the kidnappers. Some reports suggest the ransom is ₦50 million, others say it is ₦20 million, and a few mention ₦10 million, but it remains unclear if these amounts are accurate.
A parishioner, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted how the kidnappers forced Fr. Ubaechu to remove his cassock and took him away in his own vehicle, which was later recovered by naval personnel at Izombe.
Parishioners have been anxiously awaiting updates on the priest’s situation, praying for his safe return. They have also called on the state government and security agencies to intervene in the matter, as Fr. Ubaechu, being a missionary, does not have significant personal wealth.
