Emir of Ilorin Urges Politicians to Be Honest with Electorate

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has called on Nigerian politicians to always be truthful with the electorate. He stressed the importance of politicians understanding the needs and challenges of the people they intend to govern, rather than waiting until elections are near to engage with them.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
While receiving a delegation from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by its 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, at his palace in Ilorin, Kwara State, the Emir condemned the behavior of some politicians who remain disconnected from the people but still expect their votes during elections.
“It’s crucial for politicians to genuinely know the people they seek to govern. They shouldn’t wait until election time to get to know them. Politicians must stop deceiving the people. Honesty can still win hearts,” the Emir stated.
He praised the SDP for its approach to politicking, particularly their efforts to engage with the people across the country and understand their challenges. The Emir also blessed the SDP leaders and their entourage, including former Minister of Sports, Chief Simon Lalong.
Prince Adebayo, who had earlier briefed the Emir on their visit, explained that they were in Kwara to hold iftar and Ramadan lectures with Muslim faithful. He pointed out that Nigeria’s underdevelopment is largely due to a lack of honesty from its leaders.
“At SDP, our mission is to serve God and humanity,” Adebayo concluded.

WAUTI, which comprises National Tax Institutes/Associations from ECOWAS member states, is committed to enhancing tax professionalism, improving tax compliance, and streamlining tax administration within the region. With Nigeria at the helm, WAUTI aims to further its vision of harmonizing tax practices across West Africa, fostering a transparent and equitable taxation system that boosts economic growth and compliance.
In his acceptance speech, Agbeluyi expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the organization, vowing to collaborate closely with fellow executives and stakeholders to advance the Union’s objectives. He highlighted his commitment to working on regional partnerships that will support professionalism in the tax systems of WAUTI’s member states.
Agbeluyi’s vast experience, which includes serving as the Honorary Treasurer and 2nd Vice President of CITN, has positioned him well for this new role. He is also a distinguished member of various prestigious bodies, such as the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), and has earned numerous accolades in the field of taxation.
In addition to Agbeluyi’s election, other members of WAUTI’s Executive for the 2025-2027 tenure were also selected, including the re-election of Mr. Innocent Ohagwa, CITN’s current Vice President, as the Honorary Treasurer. This marks the beginning of a new era of regional cooperation in tax administration under Nigerian leadership.
