Published

on

In an exclusive interview, Shehu Gabam, the national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), discussed the ongoing political realignment, the party’s stance on coalitions, and the party’s internal dynamics. Gabam emphasized that the SDP was a strong institution and that joining a coalition designed to create division and crisis would be detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic progress.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

When asked about the possibility of SDP leading or joining a coalition, Gabam stressed that it was not about the party, but about the readiness of others to abide by the party’s principles. He compared SDP’s aspirations to the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa, asserting that any president elected under SDP would have to uphold the party’s manifesto, unlike what happened with the PDP and APC, where personal agendas overshadowed party manifestos.

Addressing internal disagreements within the party, particularly regarding the resignation of Dr. Olu Agunloye, Gabam dismissed rumors of forced resignations, clarifying that there were misunderstandings between Agunloye and a few state chairmen, and that these issues were being addressed.

Furthermore, Gabam reaffirmed that all positions in the party, including his own, were open to contest in the upcoming convention. He emphasized that the SDP was focused on building a strong, democratic institution, not driven by egos but by a commitment to the people of Nigeria.

On the subject of governance, Gabam highlighted the importance of protecting citizens’ lives, ensuring law and order, and creating a conducive environment for investment. He expressed disappointment over the current state of Nigerian institutions and called for reforms that would empower citizens and create a more transparent and accountable government.

Gabam also discussed the emergency rule in Rivers State, asserting that there were no constitutional provisions for the president to suspend elected governors or assembly members. He emphasized that actions such as these were reckless and unconstitutional, and that Nigeria must return to its democratic roots to avoid dictatorship and strengthen the nation’s institutions.
