The release of the captives was confirmed by counter-terrorism expert Zagazola Makama on Tuesday, who cited security sources. The decision is believed to be a response to intensified airstrikes and ground assaults on Turji’s hideouts in areas such as Fakai and Shinkafi.
Military sources claim Turji’s move to release the hostages is strategic, designed to avoid further confrontation with the security forces, who are closing in on him. The Nigerian Armed Forces have vowed to capture Turji “dead or alive.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ben Bem Goong, the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Affairs, emphasized the importance of heightened vigilance to curb the spread of the infection. Anthrax, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, can impact warm-blooded animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses, and it can also affect humans. Symptoms include fever, coughing, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, itching, and bleeding.
The Ministry urged neighboring states to take immediate action to prevent further transmission and called on the public to report any unusual health symptoms in both animals and humans. The government also recommended following all preventive measures suggested by relevant authorities, such as animal vaccination and early detection.
