The protesters, carrying placards with messages like “Don’t kill us” and “Challenge is a central market,” voiced concerns over the negative impact of the barricades, which have blocked critical routes linking areas like Post Office, Challenge, and Ahmadu Bello Way. One trader expressed frustration, saying, “Our businesses have suffered, as we can no longer attract customers. The economic hardship is becoming unbearable.”

Tensions escalated over the weekend when a barricade entrance was reportedly torn down. To maintain order, security forces were deployed to the Challenge area. A police officer confirmed their presence, emphasizing the need for peace and order during the protests.

Traders like Toyin Samson shared their struggles, stating that many customers had abandoned their shops due to the limited access. They are now calling on the government to create additional entrances to the Challenge market to alleviate the situation.

In response to the controversy, ESV Abdulraheem Sulyman, Chairman of the Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KW-GIS), explained that the reclamation exercise is part of a broader initiative aligned with federal directives to enhance security by securing public institutions and major roads across the state.
