Graham Potter Faces Tough Start As West Ham Manager In FA Cup Exit

Published

Graham Potter’s first game as West Ham manager ended in disappointment as his side suffered a 2-1 comeback defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Friday, January 10.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Appointed just a day earlier to replace Julen Lopetegui, who departed after a brief six-month stint, Potter faced a tough opening challenge at the helm of the Hammers.

West Ham started brightly, with Lucas Paquetá scoring early after a sharp assist from Crysencio Summerville. However, the joy was short-lived as the team encountered setbacks, including an injury to Germany striker Niclas Füllkrug, despite showing attacking promise in the first half.

The second half exposed defensive vulnerabilities, allowing Aston Villa to seize control. Amadou Onana equalized in the 71st minute following a contentious corner decision, which West Ham players argued should not have been given. Just five minutes later, Morgan Rogers sealed the win for Villa with a decisive strike.

Despite the loss and West Ham’s early FA Cup exit, Potter found silver linings in his team’s performance. “Disappointed to go out, but there were lots of positives in the game,” he remarked. Potter acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly in handling opponent pressure, and committed to addressing those weaknesses in the weeks ahead.

With only a single training session before the match and several key players missing, including Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio, Potter faced significant challenges in his first outing. It also marked his return to management nearly two years after parting ways with Chelsea in 2023.

Potter’s journey at West Ham begins with an uphill battle, but the match showed glimpses of potential he aims to build upon.

The figure was revealed during the 56th Annual General Meeting held in Kaduna on Wednesday. Chairman of the company, Alhaji Lamis Dikko, credited the achievement to improved operational efficiency and strategic resource utilization.

He noted that the company recorded a revenue of N794.64 million—a 33% increase from the previous year’s N532.53 million—while also reducing operating expenses by 9%, amounting to N974.14 million. Profit before tax rose sharply from N2.51 billion to N3.24 billion.

Dikko applauded the Northern States Governors’ Forum for providing strategic direction through bold reform policies aligned with the developmental ideals of the late Premier, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

“Our alignment with this visionary agenda continues to steer our growth. We are focused on performance, strong corporate governance, and value creation,” he said.

He also disclosed that as of November 2024, the company had trained 1,718 professionals at centers across Kaduna, Kano, Ilorin, and Gombe in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Highlighting the importance of human capital investment, Dikko described the initiative as essential to sustaining the company’s growth and preparing future leaders.

The NNDC chairman further expressed confidence in the organization’s future, citing emerging opportunities and strategic projects as key to ongoing success. He acknowledged the contributions of former board chairman Alhaji Tanimu Yakubu and commended the efforts of the past board, made up of the Secretaries to the Governments of the 19 northern states.

Owned collectively by the 19 northern states through the Northern Governors’ Forum, NNDC continues to position itself as a driver of economic development in Northern Nigeria.
