Nigeria’s Under-18 Men’s Basketball team, known as the J’Tigers, faced disappointment in the 2024 Afrobasket U-18 Championship after suffering an 81-70 defeat against Mali in the quarterfinals held in Pretoria, South Africa, on Thursday night.
From the beginning of the game, the Malians showcased their strength, winning the first quarter 23-19. They maintained their lead through the break, going into halftime ahead 40-38. Despite the J’Tigers’ efforts to regain control in the second half, they were unable to overcome Mali’s relentless gameplay, resulting in their exit from the tournament.
To reach the quarterfinals, the Junior D’Tigers had previously defeated Uganda with a score of 72-61 on Tuesday. In contrast, Mali secured their place by overcoming Ivory Coast in a tight match, finishing 73-69.
The championship is crucial for the participating teams, as the winners and runners-up will qualify for the FIBA World Championship scheduled to take place in Switzerland. Unfortunately, the J’Tigers will not have the opportunity to compete at this level.
In more positive news for Nigeria, the J’Tigress, the women’s basketball team, advanced to the semifinals after a narrow victory over Egypt, winning 61-56 in their quarterfinal match. The J’Tigress are set to face Uganda in the semifinals on Friday night, promising another exciting match for Nigerian basketball fans.
In another quarterfinal match on Thursday, the Rwanda Under-18 men’s national team was eliminated from the FIBA Afrobasket 2024 after a surprising 67-53 loss to Cameroon at the University of Pretoria Gymnasium. Rwanda initially led the game, winning the first quarter 16-14. However, Cameroon fought back, winning the second quarter 22-16, which gave them a halftime lead of 36-32.
Despite Rwanda’s efforts to reclaim the game in the third quarter, where they outscored Cameroon 17-15, the final quarter saw Cameroon dominate with a score of 16-4. The Cameroonian team moved on to the semifinals, while Rwanda will now compete in a classification game for the 5th to 8th positions.
Cameroon’s Amadou Seini stood out, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing 23 rebounds. Hermann Bel Daryl Bay also contributed significantly with 15 points. For Rwanda, Dylan Kayijuka led the scoring with 19 points, while Sean Mwesigwa added 12 points.

Manchester United to Stand By Amorim, Target Cunha as First Signing

Despite a challenging season, Manchester United has expressed full backing for head coach Rúben Amorim, reaffirming their commitment to his leadership as they plan for the upcoming transfer window. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the club’s hierarchy has made it clear that they have confidence in Amorim and intend to support him moving forward.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Romano stated on Thursday that unless a major unforeseen event occurs, the club’s clear intention is to maintain Amorim’s position at the helm. This announcement comes after a series of setbacks, including a 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final and a disappointing 16th-place standing in the Premier League with one match remaining.
In line with this strategy, Manchester United is reportedly eyeing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as their first major signing under Amorim. Meanwhile, speculation continues over the potential departure of Alejandro Garnacho, with the player’s future contingent on receiving an acceptable offer.
As Manchester United looks to rebuild for the future, Amorim’s tenure as manager remains secure, and the club aims to strengthen its squad, beginning with the addition of Cunha.

Okoye Returns to Super Eagles Squad After Six-Month Absence

Maduka Okoye has earned a recall to the Super Eagles after a six-month absence, ahead of Nigeria’s matches at the Unity Cup in London and a historic international friendly against Russia in Moscow, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 25-year-old Udinese goalkeeper had been sidelined due to a wrist injury and off-pitch controversy. He last appeared for Nigeria in a 2–1 loss to Rwanda during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in November. He was omitted from the March World Cup qualifiers due to fitness concerns and poor form.
Between December 2024 and March 2025, Okoye missed 14 games for Udinese. His injury layoff coincided with an investigation into suspicious betting patterns surrounding a yellow card he received for time-wasting, with Italian authorities linking the incident to alleged bets placed by a local pizzeria owner.
Despite being temporarily dropped from Udinese’s 25-man squad, Okoye returned to action in March and has since featured in 10 games, bringing his season total to 25 appearances, with five clean sheets and 37 goals conceded.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle included Okoye in his 25-man squad for the Unity Cup, where Nigeria will compete against Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
He will battle Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie for the starting goalkeeper role, intensifying competition within the squad.
Chelle commented, “The Unity Cup gives us an opportunity to experiment with different players and roles as we prepare for important fixtures later this year.”
The squad combines experienced internationals with high-performing players from the Nigeria Premier Football League, including Remo Stars captain Junior Nduka.
Defensive options include Semi Ajayi, Igoh Ogbu, Bruno Onyemaechi, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, Sodiq Ismaila, and Waliu Ojetoye.
Midfield selections feature Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Chrisantus Uche, Saviour Isaac, Papa Daniel Mustapha, and Collins Ugwueze.
The attacking lineup includes captain Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho, Nathan Tella, Cyriel Dessers, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Tolu Arokodare, Sikiru Alimi, and Adamu Abubakar.
Conspicuously missing is Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, who scored 36 goals this season and helped his team to a Turkish league and cup double.
The Unity Cup will take place at Brentford FC’s Gtech Community Stadium, starting May 27. Trinidad and Tobago face Jamaica in the first semi-final, followed by Nigeria’s clash with Ghana on May 28. The tournament concludes with a final and third-place match on May 31.
For the June 6 friendly against Russia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, Chelle named a 21-man squad, introducing tactical adjustments to test new combinations ahead of World Cup qualifiers.
Key additions include William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, and Bright Osayi-Samuel in defence, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika bolster midfield options.
The attacking unit sees the return of Victor Boniface and Sadiq Umar, alongside Simon, Tella, Chukwueze, and Iheanacho.
This fixture marks the first senior meeting between Nigeria and Russia and provides a high-profile opportunity to evaluate squad depth ahead of the upcoming qualification rounds.
