The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has made it clear that any attempts at age cheating during the National Youth Games will not be tolerated. These Games are specifically designed for athletes aged 15 years and below, and maintaining their integrity is paramount.

Emphasizing the need for fair play, Enoh urged all participating states to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship. He also called on spectators and fans to cheer for the young athletes representing their states across various sports disciplines.

In a statement released by Diana-Mary Nsan, the Special Adviser (Media) to the minister, it was confirmed that Enoh officially opened the National Youth Games on Thursday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

“As the name suggests, this competition is strictly for the youth,” Enoh stated. “We are committed to providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents in a fair and transparent environment. The technical team has been instructed to ensure that only athletes within the age bracket of 15 years and below participate.”

The minister highlighted the detrimental impact of age cheating on the Games, stating, “Age cheating undermines the purpose of these Games, and we will take firm measures to prevent it.”

Delta State is proudly hosting this year’s event, which promises to be an exciting celebration of youth talent and sportsmanship. The National Youth Games have become a vital part of Nigeria’s sports calendar, allowing young athletes to compete at a national level while honing their skills.

Furthermore, the NYG plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s talent identification and development strategy, fostering the next generation of sporting stars. The opening ceremony is expected to be a grand spectacle, attended by various dignitaries and sports stakeholders, all celebrating the future of Nigerian sports.
