In a decisive action aimed at supporting the Federal Government’s policy on the ease of doing business and combating economic sabotage, the Nigeria Police Force has arrested 20 suspects involved in unauthorized revenue collection and multiple taxations along the Enugu and Abakaliki-Ebonyi highways.

The arrests were announced by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Wednesday. He described the operation as a significant step towards eliminating illegal activities that hinder economic growth and ensuring the smooth flow of industrial and agricultural goods across Nigeria’s highways.

“The arrests mark a significant step towards eradicating illegal activities, promoting economic growth, and ensuring the free flow of industrial and agricultural produce on highways across the country,” Adejobi stated.

The police made their first breakthrough on August 24, 2024, at 3 a.m., when they arrested 14 suspects at the Abakaliki and Ebonyi boundary. Subsequent arrests included five suspects at Abumeje, Ogoja, and one last suspect at the Onuakpu area of Ebonyi. These individuals were apprehended for economic sabotage, illegal revenue collection, and multiple taxation on highways.

The five suspects from Abumeje and Ogoja have already been charged, while the remaining suspects, currently held at the Ebonyi Command, are set to appear in court soon.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to dismantling all illegal revenue collection points and eradicating unlawful taxation practices. He emphasized that these efforts are crucial for creating a safer, more secure environment for citizens, particularly for those engaged in business across the country.

“The operation marks a strong start for the police in escalating and enforcing the Presidential order on the ease of doing business and the fight against illegal roadblocks, revenue collection, and multiple taxation on the highways, with a view to promoting economic development in Nigeria,” Adejobi added.
