On Tuesday, the Senate is set to conduct a screening of Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, the former Chairman of Citi Bank Nigeria’s Board, for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Additionally, four nominees for the positions of Deputy Governors of the CBN will undergo the screening process, as they prepare to collaborate with Dr. Cardoso in overseeing the affairs of the apex bank over the next five years.
According to a statement from the Media Office of the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, this screening will take place following the Senate’s resumption from its annual recess. The Senate had previously adjourned its proceedings for the annual recess on August 8th.

The statement elaborates, “The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will resume plenary on Tuesday, Sept. 26. We will consider the screening of Dr. Cardoso at the Committee of the Whole. Cardoso will be screened alongside four deputy governors, namely: Mrs. Emem Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala Bello.”
In addition to this, the Senate has also scheduled the screening of ministerial nominees, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim and Mr. Ayodele Olawande, designated respectively as the Minister of Youth and Minister of State for Youth, for October 3rd.
President Bola Tinubu had previously approved the nomination of Dr. Cardoso as the new Governor of the CBN on September 15th. Tinubu also approved the nomination of four Deputy Governors, each for a term of five years initially, pending their confirmation by the Senate.
