Tinubu Administration Has Not Brought Back Fuel Subsidy....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has addressed concerns that the administration led by President Bola Tinubu may have covertly reinstated fuel subsidies. The APC clarified that the government’s intervention was aimed at ensuring a degree of price stability and predictability.

Reports had surfaced indicating that the administration spent N169.4 billion in August to maintain the fuel pump price at N620. While the opposition seized on this revelation to criticize the Tinubu administration, the APC countered these claims on Monday night, asserting that such substantial payments did not signify the return of subsidies.

The APC also criticized Phrank Shaibu, the Media Aide to the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for spreading “fake news” and engaging in activities aimed at discrediting President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

According to the APC spokesperson, Felix Morka, in a statement issued on Monday night, Shaibu “outed himself in his warped and misleading suggestion that the APC-led Administration was hoodwinking Nigerians by propaganda.”

Morka attributed Shaibu’s comments to a lack of understanding of complex economic and governance issues, possibly stemming from post-electoral traumatic stress disorder (PeTSD) resulting from his boss’s repeated electoral defeats.

The APC spokesperson emphasized that the administration’s decisions to eliminate fuel subsidies, streamline foreign exchange policies, and enact the Students’ Loan Act were essential steps toward economic development and governance. These measures, while still undergoing implementation, were designed to address long-standing distortions and contradictions and promote overall recovery and prosperity for Nigeria.

Morka also highlighted President Tinubu’s appointments of experienced professionals to key economic institutions and the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy as part of efforts to rejuvenate and grow the economy.

Regarding diplomatic matters, Morka mentioned the lifting of the Visa ban on Nigerians by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities and clarified that diplomatic discussions with the UAE were ongoing. Additionally, he noted that a proposed meeting between President Tinubu and President Joe Biden during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was unnecessary and not part of President Tinubu’s schedule.

In summary, the APC sought to debunk the notion of a fuel subsidy reintroduction and criticized Shaibu’s comments as lacking a nuanced understanding of the government’s economic policies and initiatives.

Published

on

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has formally issued an arrest warrant for Mele Kyari, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), following his repeated failure to appear before the panel. The committee is currently investigating 19 audit queries issued by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation regarding the NNPCL’s financial activities between 2017 and 2023, which include an alleged unaccounted sum of ₦210 trillion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Disagreement Over the Arrest Warrant

The decision to issue the warrant followed a contentious debate among committee members:

  • Calls for Lenience: Senators Saliu Mustapha and Tony Nwoye urged Chairman Ibrahim Dankwambo to grant Kyari additional time, citing reports that the former executive is currently receiving medical treatment in Germany.

  • Opposition to Delays: Other senators, including Abdul Ningi and Victor Umeh, argued that these verbal excuses were insufficient without formal documentary evidence.

  • Final Decision: Deputy Chairman Senator Peter Nwaebonyi characterized further delays as a “wild goose chase,” noting that this was the ninth committee meeting regarding these queries. Consequently, Chairman Dankwambo ordered that Kyari be arrested and brought before the committee to assist in concluding the assignment.

Defense Against Financial Allegations

Umar Ajiya Isa, a former Chief Financial Officer of the NNPCL, appeared before the committee to refute the allegations:

  • Impossibility of the Figure: Isa asserted that the ₦210 trillion figure is impossible, noting that the NNPCL’s total revenue for the period 2017–2023 was approximately ₦54.5 trillion.

  • Commitment to Transparency: He emphasized that the company had published audited accounts, a practice that had not been maintained for over 40 years prior to their tenure.

  • Broader Impact: Isa warned that circulating unverified claims harms Nigeria’s international reputation, credit ratings, and national projects, specifically pointing to how past petitions disrupted financing for the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas Pipeline.

The committee has directed Umar Ajiya Isa and Bala Wunti, the former Chief Upstream Investment Officer, to reappear in two weeks to continue the investigation.
