The Nigerian government has refuted claims made by Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, suggesting that the federal government was engaging in secret negotiations with bandits without involving the state government.

In a statement issued on Monday by the acting Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Attari Hope, Minister Badaru dismissed Lawal’s allegations. He emphasized that the federal government was actively working to secure the release of the abducted students and other victims. The Minister expressed confidence in the joint security task forces working tirelessly to rescue the students.

Badaru clarified, “The allegation is false and misleading as the Ministry has not mandated anybody or group to negotiate on behalf of the Federal Government.” He also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the military and other security agencies to secure the release of the abducted individuals, mentioning that progress had already been made with 13 students and three others regaining their freedom on September 25, 2023.
