The Benue State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its disagreement with the decision of the State Elections Petition Tribunal, which upheld the election of State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia. Additionally, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Joseph Alakali, regarded Governor Alia’s victory as a validation of the will of Benue citizens, as demonstrated in the last gubernatorial election. However, the PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, stated in a release that the PDP rejected the tribunal’s decision, asserting that it failed to meet the criteria of substantive justice and did not align with existing electoral laws and regulations. Consequently, the party plans to take the matter to the appellate court, as directed by law.

Iortyom emphasized, “Our party urges its supporters across the state to remain calm and optimistic, as we believe that, although the path to justice may be long, we will ultimately succeed in reclaiming the Governorship mandate.”

On the other hand, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Alia, Sir Kula Tersoo, conveyed the Governor’s view that the judgment represents a triumph for democracy and the rule of law. Governor Alia expressed his belief that the court, once again, demonstrated itself as the final refuge of the common people and a stronghold against attempts to seize power illegitimately. The tribunal reaffirmed the mandate bestowed upon him by the people of the state in the elections.

Meanwhile, SSG Prof Joseph Alakali welcomed the tribunal’s decision, describing it as an affirmation of the desires of Benue residents, as expressed through their votes. He praised the thoroughness and professionalism of the Panel of Judges in handling the case, showcasing the maturity of the Nigerian legal system. Prof Alakali hoped that the PDP’s governorship candidate, Hon. Titus Uba, would inspire his supporters to prioritize patriotism over partisan considerations and support the Alia administration. He expressed confidence that Governor Alia would now focus more on delivering his promises to the people, with the distraction of the tribunal resolved.

According to a statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Justice A.O. Owoeye, sitting at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday, March 12, 2026, ruled that the Responsible Leaders Hotel, located at 1 Ostra Close, Jobi Fele Way, Alausa, Ikeja, be temporarily handed over to the government. The property is valued at approximately ₦1.3 billion.

The order followed an urgent application by the EFCC, presented by its lawyer, C.C. Okezie, who provided evidence suggesting the hotel was acquired through illicit means. The application was supported by an affidavit sworn by Obed Tanko, an EFCC investigator.

According to the EFCC, Olutoke allegedly convinced numerous Nigerians to invest billions of naira in a capital-guaranteed forex trading and investment scheme, promising secure funds and high returns.

Investigations revealed that neither Olutoke nor his company had the required legal permits to operate an investment business. Instead of trading the funds as promised, the EFCC claims the money was used to acquire expensive properties, including the Ikeja hotel.

During the hearing, Okezie argued that the hotel should be seized as it was reasonably suspected to have been purchased with proceeds from unlawful activities. After reviewing the evidence, Justice Owoeye agreed, ruling that the asset should be temporarily taken over while the case proceeds.

The judge also ordered the EFCC to publish the decision in a national newspaper, allowing anyone with a legal claim to the hotel to come forward and explain why the property should not ultimately be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
