The Ministry of Health in Jigawa State has officially confirmed the occurrence of a suspected diphtheria outbreak, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 10 individuals, with 91 suspected cases reported across 14 local government areas within the state.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Salisu Mu’azu, provided this confirmation while addressing journalists. He disclosed that two cases have already been confirmed in Kazaure and Jahun local governments, with additional samples sent to Abuja for further verification. Notably, the affected areas in the state were found to have had zero immunization coverage against the disease.

Mu’azu emphasized that the outbreak has raised concerns in Jigawa, given its proximity to Kano and Yobe states. Consequently, the state ministry is prioritizing vigilance and intensifying efforts to tackle the emerging health crisis.

Regarding vaccinations, the state government’s permanent secretary stated that preparations are underway for the administration of vaccines as soon as they become available.
