In his address on Wednesday, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, expressed concern about the challenging state of the country’s judiciary due to the increasing number of pending cases in various courts. He acknowledged that Nigeria consistently ranks among the world’s most litigious nations.

However, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the need for a cultural shift towards reducing litigation and promoting alternative dispute resolution methods. This shift, he argued, would alleviate the burden on the courts and prevent the depletion of human and material resources.

The Chief Justice made these remarks during the inauguration of nine newly appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court. He attributed the rising caseload to the prevalence of novel crimes, particularly political cases, which have significantly impacted the court system.
