Nunieh formally announced his departure from the PDP through a handwritten letter, while other top aides of the governor relinquished their positions to actively support Sylva’s campaign.
Sylva’s Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Julius Bokoru, confirmed Nunieh’s meeting with the APC candidate. Nunieh explained that the decision to leave the PDP was motivated by the desire to alter the developmental course of the Epie-Atissa people, emphasizing the urgency of change given the current state of Bayelsa.
He stated, “We have dedicated years to the PDP, contributing to its growth. However, it is now imperative that we move forward, especially considering the current state of affairs in the state. Bayelsa is facing serious challenges, and we cannot persist with the status quo and hope for improvement. Our departure from the PDP is a genuine effort to rescue our beloved state from further decline.”
Sylva praised the courage of Nunieh and other defectors for prioritizing the progress and development of Bayelsa over personal interests. He recognized the significance of youth engagement in shaping the future of the state, commending their selfless decision to place the state’s well-being above all else.
The statement listed several individuals who left the Diri-led government to join Sylva’s camp, including Abiah Joseph Oyisor, the director of the Bayelsa State Environmental Authority; Ayaye Obuma, the governor’s representative in Yenagoa Local Government Area; Itu Goodluck, the special adviser on special duties to the governor; Timipa Ile, the special adviser on special duties to the governor; and Olali Suwofien, the special adviser on special duties.
It was announced that the defectors would be formally endorsed in a ceremony attended by thousands of their supporters, solidifying their commitment to the APC and Sylva’s gubernatorial candidacy.
