Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his deputy, Phillip Shaibu, appeared to be in a renewed state of conflict on Monday, as reports suggested that the governor had allegedly denied his deputy access to his office.
Numerous sources from within the government house confirmed that the Deputy Governor, accompanied by his security personnel, attempted to enter the Governor’s personal office.

According to reports, the Deputy Governor arrived at the Governor’s Office on Dennis Osadebey Avenue early Monday and sought to confront the governor. However, he was informed that the governor was not yet in his office. Despite security personnel advising him to contact the governor if he wanted to see him, the Deputy Governor insisted on gaining access to the Governor’s personal office.
One source noted, “All efforts by security operatives to request that he kindly go back and call the governor if he wished to see him were ignored. Instead, he persisted in pushing the gate, causing a scene. Observers are concerned that he might physically confront the governor.”
Another source revealed that both the gate to the Deputy Governor’s office and the main entrance to the building were secured with chains and heavy padlocks.
Shaibu reportedly waited for approximately an hour before leaving. During this time, he attempted to reach the Governor but was unsuccessful.
It was discovered that Shaibu engaged with the state Commissioner of Police and the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), informing them of the situation. He also summoned the Government House Camp Commandant, Ibrahim Babatunde, to inquire about the situation. Babatunde reportedly indicated that the directive to lock the office came from higher authorities, suggesting that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Government House, Williams Wabba, would be better equipped to provide an explanation. However, Wabba did not arrive to address the matter before the Deputy Governor departed.
