Suspected hoodlums are believed to have seized three truckloads of relief rice in the Oja-Oba/Idi-Ape/Isale-Oja regions of Ilorin West and Ilorin East local government areas in Kwara State.

The Toyota Dana trucks, laden with 10kg bags of rice, were en route to an undisclosed location when they were assaulted and commandeered by the suspected hoodlums around 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred just a short distance from the ‘C’ division police station, although police personnel arrived at the scene only after the event had transpired.

Traders and market women disclosed that the attackers emptied the three trucks loaded with rice bags, leading to a chaotic scene as individuals scrambled to acquire a share of the bags thrown at them by the hoodlums.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers carried out their actions without opposition, as the police arrived at the location after their departure.

It was further revealed that a video capturing the incident became viral on various social media platforms in the state on Sunday.

A senior police officer, speaking anonymously, informed the platform that law enforcement operatives were subsequently dispatched to several areas to apprehend the culprits. However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kwara Police Command, Okasanmi Ajayi, claimed to be unaware of the incident when contacted for confirmation, but he promised to provide further information. Twenty-one inmates awaiting trial have been granted freedom from the Port Harcourt Maximum Correctional Centre.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, their release was ordered on Thursday by the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, during his official visit to the facility—a visit aimed at tackling the growing problem of overcrowding in the state’s correctional centres.

Built to accommodate 1,500 inmates, the Port Harcourt prison currently holds over 2,500, creating severe and inhumane conditions for those detained.

Justice Amadi explained that each case was carefully reviewed, and only inmates whose court files could not be located and who had spent prolonged periods in custody without progress on their cases were considered for release. Those with ongoing court proceedings were not eligible.

Among those freed were two individuals who had been incarcerated for nearly a decade without trial and were reported to be mentally unstable.

The Chief Judge stressed that detaining people indefinitely without trial benefits no one and often destroys their health and dignity. He clarified that the releases were in line with his statutory duties under the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) Special Provision Act and the Rivers State Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

He further urged law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations before filing charges, in order to prevent innocent people from languishing in custody unnecessarily
