Sad News: ICAN Confirms The Death Of Akintola Williams....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has officially confirmed the passing of Akintola Williams, who was Africa’s first chartered accountant at the age of 30.

According to a trustworthy source within the Institute, both the President and the Registrar of ICAN are currently out of town. Nevertheless, a visit was made to the residence of the late Akintola Williams to verify the news of his demise.

Akintola Williams played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Association of Accountants in Nigeria in 1960, with the primary objective of training accountants. He served as the inaugural president of this association and also held the position of the pioneering president of ICAN.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of accountancy and his impact on Nigeria’s economic growth, he received the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 1982 and the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2001 from the Nigerian government.

Furthermore, Akintola Williams was honored with awards from various organizations, including the Nigeria-Britain Association, which recognized his contributions to democracy and development alongside John Kufuor, the former President of Ghana, on May 8, 2011.

Born on August 9, 1919, into the family of Thomas Ekundayo Williams, he began his education at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School in Lagos during the 1930s. He later attended CMS Grammar School, Lagos, for his secondary education. His academic excellence earned him a UAC scholarship to Yaba Higher College, where he obtained a diploma in commerce.

Continuing his education, he pursued studies in banking and finance at the University of London in 1944, graduating with a bachelor of commerce degree in 1946. He furthered his studies, becoming a chartered accountant in England in 1949, marking him as the first African to achieve this prestigious status.

Returning to Nigeria in 1950, he served as an assessment officer with the Inland Revenue until his resignation in March 1952. Subsequently, he founded his own accounting firm, Akintola Williams and Co., which became the first indigenous chartered accounting firm in Africa.

Under his leadership, the firm expanded its reach, establishing branches and partnerships in other African countries, including Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Swaziland, and forging affiliations in Ghana, Egypt, and Kenya. Between April 1999 and May 2004, Akintola Williams & Co. merged with two other accounting firms, ultimately creating Akintola Williams Deloitte (now known as Deloitte & Touche), which stands as the largest professional services firm in Nigeria with nearly a thousand staff members.

The Lagos State Government has called on property owners to upgrade and beautify their buildings in order to improve the state’s overall appearance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This appeal was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, and released through the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, on Tuesday in Lagos.

Olumide specifically urged owners of properties located along major highways to give their buildings the necessary facelift.

“We appeal to property owners, particularly those situated along key highways such as Ikorodu Road, Agege Motor Road, Ahmadu Bello Way, Adeola Odeku Street, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, and Herbert Macaulay Way, to take prompt action in enhancing the appearance of their building exteriors,” he said.

The commissioner explained that such efforts would align with the state’s mission to transform Lagos into a 21st-century economy.

He further advised property owners along major roads to consistently maintain and improve the exterior of their structures through repainting, façade upgrades, and general renovations — all in support of the government’s Greater Lagos vision

Ambition Over Party: Eradiri Blames Atiku for PDP’s Collapse Ahead of LG Polls”

Former Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) President, Udengs Eradiri, has called on 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to abandon his 2027 presidential bid in the interest of national unity and political stability.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Eradiri warned that Atiku’s continued pursuit of the presidency has inflicted significant damage on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), once viewed by many Nigerians as a viable alternative to the ruling party.

He urged Atiku to prioritise national interest, stressing that the former vice president’s unrelenting ambition has had particularly negative consequences for the Niger Delta.

Eradiri, who previously served as Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youths and later for Environment, claimed that Atiku’s political desperation before the 2023 elections pushed Delta State into severe debt. He alleged that former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was pressured to finance Atiku’s campaign in return for being picked as his running mate.

He further argued that Atiku’s candidacy disrupted the power rotation agreement between the North and South, weakening the PDP’s credibility as a true opposition force.

Urging Atiku to adopt the posture of an elder statesman, Eradiri advised him to make way for younger, more regionally representative candidates in the 2027 race.

“I urge Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to show true statesmanship by stepping away from his presidential ambition,” Eradiri said. “This appeal is not based on politics, but on the undeniable harm his ambition has done—especially to the Niger Delta. After eight years of northern rule under President Muhammadu Buhari, it should have been the South’s turn, but that opportunity was seized.”

He continued, “The PDP lies in disarray today because of Atiku’s relentless quest. His ambition has fractured the opposition and introduced instability into the political landscape. A functional democracy requires a strong opposition, but Atiku’s personal goals have dealt a serious blow to the party many Nigerians once believed in.”

Crackdown in Lagos! NAFDAC Seals Shops, Arrests Six Over Banned Bleaching Creams

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested six individuals and sealed multiple shops in Sabon Gari, Kano, over the illicit sale of skin-bleaching products.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Mr. Kasim Ibrahim, NAFDAC’s Kano State Coordinator, made this known at a press briefing on Tuesday. He revealed that the clampdown followed a wave of public complaints across social media platforms, prompting a directive from the agency’s Director-General.

“In response to social media reports and a directive from our Director-General, we launched undercover surveillance and conducted mystery shopping of the suspected products,” Ibrahim stated.

He said investigations revealed that six individuals were involved in the distribution and sale of harmful, unapproved bleaching creams marketed as spa treatments.

“These products were disguised as beauty treatments but contained hazardous and unregistered ingredients,” he explained.

The raid, carried out in conjunction with NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, led to the arrest of suspects, product profiling, sample collection for lab analysis, and the sealing of affected shops. Ibrahim also noted that companies found to be counterfeiting registered cosmetic products or breaching regulations were similarly shut down pending further investigation.

Reaffirming NAFDAC’s mandate to regulate the production and sale of cosmetics and related items, he warned of the public health dangers posed by the unregulated sale of such products.

“This decisive action is part of our commitment to preventing public health crises caused by toxic and unapproved substances,” Ibrahim said.

He urged the public to stay alert and report suspicious activities, stressing NAFDAC’s resolve—under the leadership of Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye—to enforce regulatory standards.

“If you see something, say something. This is how we can all help avert potential health emergencies,” he added.
