The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman Pakistan, has publicly expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their decisive intervention in resolving the recent controversy over the issuance of Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) to intending pilgrims via Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Professor Pakistan, the timely involvement of the Presidency led the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reverse its earlier directive mandating ATM card issuance instead of cash for pilgrims, a move that had sparked widespread concerns.

While acknowledging the inevitability of global technological evolution, the NAHCON Chairman emphasized that such innovations must be integrated thoughtfully, in line with local culture and societal readiness. He stressed that progress must respect the realities on the ground, especially for predominantly rural and elderly pilgrims who are unfamiliar with modern banking systems.

He further pointed out the practical challenges with the ATM policy, highlighting the limited availability of machines in Makkah and Madinah — cities that annually host millions of pilgrims. In many of the areas where Nigerian pilgrims reside, he noted, it is rare to find even five functional ATMs.

Professor Pakistan underscored the need for proactive strategies by Hajj officials to prevent future public outcry and ensure the BTA system is both efficient and accessible. He also disclosed that, after the conclusion of this year’s pilgrimage, NAHCON will convene a stakeholders’ meeting under the guidance of Vice President Shettima to develop a long-term solution.
